Fitting in with the Joneses
The world gets sucked into this mentality of wanting to keep up with the Joneses, and wanting to have what others have and trying to look good in others eyes. Everyone is tempted with this mentality.
Churches get sucked into this mentality of wanting to do what other churches do to bring people in — however they should focus on what Jesus calls them to do. The focus should be a sincere relationship and servanthood. The focus should be the heaven on earth, instead of earth on earth.
On a personal level, I ask myself, am I trying to impress others with Jesus, or am I trying to impress others with me? Am I focused on self-righteousness or am I focused on servanthood?
Focus on Jesus
Life is like a long hike. I need to pack the right supplies — the necessities. Anything extra will absorb too much energy to carry along, even if it’s a good thing. I need to throw off the extra baggage and focus on the supplies that will allow me to succeed in the journey.
Likewise, my life is like that with my spiritual journey. I need to throw off the sin and negative baggage, the greed, the fame, and all the things that sidetrack me from growing, loving, and serving Christ.
What do I want to be known by?
What quality of God can I share with others?
